AOL Browser tips

AOL enjoys the unique position as the worlds largest Internet Provider. If you use the AOL browser, you may wish to try some of these tips:
Best Tip! -
Minimize your AOL window after connecting to the Internet and use Microsoft Internet Explorer to surf the web.
Resolution -
Set your screen resolution to the highest comfortable setting. We would suggest 1024 X 768 to be the minimum for browsing most web pages.
Connect speed -
To see Your Current Connection Speed in AOL, click the Help Tab and select About America Online, when the About AOL screen pops Up, press Ctrl-Y.
No Pop-Ups! -
To remove Pop-Up Advertising from AOL, goto Settings, Preferences and reset your "Pop-Ups" to "No" .
Refresh instead of Reload -
Hold Down the Control key when you reload a Page in AOL. This will force the software to get the newest version off the web, not from your computer's memory.
Better graphics -
For better graphics quality in AOL. Goto Settings, Preferences. Click on "Internet properties WWW", select the Web Graphics Tab and pick the "Never compress graphics" option.
New Window! -
In the AOL browser you may open a link in a new window by Right clicking on the link and selecting that option.
Link in an Email -
When someone sEnds you an email with a URL in it that is not hyperlinked, highlight the URL and press "Ctrl-C" then place your cursor in the AOL Address box and press "Ctrl-V" to launch the link.
Printing from AOL -
A quick method of printing the current Page in AOL, press "Ctrl-P" to call the print manager.
Print Backgrounds - Select "Start:Settings:Control Panel" from your Windows task bar. Double-click on the "Internet Options" icon. Click the "Advanced" tab. Scroll down to the "Printing" section and check the box labeled "Print background colors and images." Click the "OK" button.
Email Auto-Spell-check! -
To set Automatic Spell Check in AOL email. Goto Settings, Preferences. Click on "Mail", select the "Perform spell check before sending" option.
Email Right Click! -
When writing an email In AOL, Right click the mouse button to get a selection of options:

Internet Explorer 7 Tips and Tricks

Of the hits from browsers on JED-WEB, about 80% of them are Internet Explorer. (IE 7 40% & IE 6 40%
If you use Internet Explorer 7, you may wish to try some of these tips:
How Fast is your Connection? -
Go to http://www.numion.com/YourSpeed/ and find out your current connect speed.
Set your Home Page -
Set your Home Page simply visit the site, click Tools, then select Internet Options, in the General Tab, click Use Current. You can now set multiple Home pages on seperate tabs by listing each Home Page on a seperate line in the Home page list.
Load IE faster without a Home Page -
Internet Explorer will load faster without a Home Page, click Tools, then select Internet Options, in the General Tab, click Use Blank.
You can turn off Tabbed Browsing by: -
Click Tools, then select Internet Options, in the General Tab, click on Tab Settings and uncheck the "Enable Tabbed Browsing" Box.
Auto complete a web address -
Enter the domain name in the Address field and press the Ctrl + Enter keys.
This will fill in the "http://www" and the ".com" in the URL address.
Quick Web Site search -
Type in the word "GO" plus the domain name in the Address field and IE will go to MSN search page site and select the best match.
Quick Subject search -
Type "find" or "?" and a word you wish to search on in the Address field and IE will go to MSN search page site and search for the best match.
Resize Text Size -
Hold down ctrl key and move the wheel on the mouse. The page text will enlarge or shrink. (Note: works only on non CSS pages)
Scroll a page with mouse wheel -
Move the wheel on the mouse to scroll up or down a web page.
Duplicate a Page -
To copy the Page you are visiting into a new window so you can come back to it, press Ctrl-N and a new duplicate window will open.
Right Click -
Right clicking on those links and images,will allow you to perform a varity of commands with the Page elements.
Check Page Last Update -
To determine when a web page was last updated, enter " javascript:alert(document.lastModified) " in the Address bar
Find text -
Press Ctrl-F on a Page and it will open a pop-Up box where you can type in a word to search for and highlight on the Page.
Arrange favorites -
Make Favorites appear in the order you wish by renaming them and prefixing the name with a Number or Letter A, B, C, ...
Print Part of a webpage -
When printing a section of a page, don't use the print icon on your browser's toolbar. Use the Ctrl-P or the "File / Print.." menu and choose the options menu.
Print a selection set -
After highlighting a text area, you can right-click anywhere in the highlighted area to access the "Print..." option.
Back out of Pop-Ups -
To back out of a stack of pop-Up windows, simply press Alt-F4 until all of the windows are closed.
Close multiple Windows -
To back out of multiple windows, simply press Ctrl-W until all of the windows are closed.

Internet Explorer 6 Tips

Of the hits from browsers on JED-WEB, about 40% of them are Internet Explorer.
If you use Internet Explorer 6, you may wish to try some of these tips or update to IE 7. It really is better!:
How Fast is your Connection? -

Netscape Navigator Tips & Tricks

Though seldom used, Netscape Navigator Web Browser has a loyal following among web surfers.
This enthusiasm is not without merit, as Netscape has some features we wish were in the other browsers:
Change Color Schemes -
Users can change the colour scheme that Netscape uses by selecting Preferences, Colors
Built in search -
Simply type a phrase in the Netsite box, Press Enter, and a list of sites containing these words will be presented.
Find Related Links -
Click the What's Related tab in the left sidebar and Netscape 6 searches for Web pages on similar topics and lists the links under this tab.
Load faster without a Home Page -
As with Internet Explorer, Netscape will load faster without a Home Page, Pull down the Edit menu, choose Preferences, then click the Navigator option. In the section with the heading "When Navigator starts up, display," click the Blank Page button.
Use "about:keyword" for information -
To access system information from Netscape Navigator, enter one of the following keywords in the location field:
- about:plugins - Displays a list of plugins loaded by Navigator. This list is built at startup so if you install a plugin while Navigator is running it will not be found.
- about:cache - Displays a list of all files and the original URLS in your disk cache.
- about:memory-cache - Displays a list of all files and the original URLS in your memory cache. Note that Navigator does not use the memory cache if you are using a disk cache.
- about:image-cache - Displays a list of all images and the original URLS in your cache.
- about:globals - Displays a list of sites you have vistited and when.
Stop loading a page -
Simply press the "Esc" key to stop loading a page that is taking a long time to load. Then hit Refresh to start loading the page again.

Mozilla Firefox Tips & Tricks

Firefox is a free, open-source web browser for Windows, Linux and MacOS X and is based on the Mozilla codebase. It is small, fast and easy to use, and offers many advantages over Internet Explorer, such as the ability to block pop-up windows. Firefox has gained user acceptance and is now the second most used browser to access JED-WEB.
Please Note, Firefox does not display web pages exactly the way Internet Explorer does. Some HTML tags such as border, alt and scroll bar attributes do not work in Firefox and pages that use ActiveX or Browser Helper Objects (BHOs) will loose those functions. We at JED-WEB still use IE and will continue to do so until some other browser takes the lead in the number of users accessing this site. For your information we have published the following links.
